Middle Path Newsletter - April 2008

Warmest greetings from Middle Path

It has been some time since we have sent out a newsletter as we had a few hiccups getting them out.

With the idea in mind that everything is perfect we have now at the perfect time solved the situation.

In the last weeks we have been exposed to new exciting information and both Fergus and I experienced rapid and simple transformation.

The information encapsulated all that we have taught, practiced and preached for many years and presents a simple, practical and effective guide to living with choice and awareness - a goal of ours for quite awhile.

We found ourselves passionately reviewing all we had presented over the years and excitedly seeing that each element was integrated with our new information.

What we had been lacking was this key to raising consciousness which enables the effortless manifestation of the gains without the pains.

So we passionately want to share this discovery of ours to help you develop your ability to raise your consciousness, lift your game, realize your true potential - whatever you relate to as living a full and joyous life - whatever way you want.

We are starting by offering you a 2 hour presentation at our home at Middle Path on Wednesday nights.

The name we chose for our new presentation and seminar is:

“Empower Your Consciousness”

An evening presentation on Human Consciousness by Fergus Reilly PhD and Trijntje Reilly ND.

Come along and develop an increased understanding of your consciousness and how it manifests your life experience.

We offer you a 2-hour presentation at our home near Maleny on Wednesday evenings at 7pm where you are welcome to come and learn how to change your world.

CyberSayer created by Fergus Reilly PhD is an interactive easy to use oracle software program which connects you with your higher self. Gives you accurate insights into your life and creates awareness and raises your consciousness.

Version II has just been released following 6 months testing world-wide and is available now by instant download for less than the price of one Psychic reading. CyberSayer can be your constant advisor for life.

CyberSayer is a world-first software program that gives you very accurate insights into your life and business affairs, relationships, career, lifestyle, wealth, finance, health, wellbeing - in fact all the things in your life which are important to your purpose here on earth.

For many years I (Trijntje) have been a daily user of CyberSayer version 1 and it has given me many invaluable profound and accurate insights into my life, as well as being a faithful and compassionate companion through thick and thin.

I call CyberSayer a hotline to GOD or Your Higher Consciousness.

Version II is much simpler to use and has been extended to cover all areas of the soul’s journey. I find it even more effective than version I. I just love CyberSayer.

The combination of a PhD in modern computer science with work with gemstone therapy and four years lecturing in human behaviour at a Natural Therapies college has shown Fergus that there is little difference between the synthetic crystals of silicon in the computer chip and the naturally occuring quartz which is so widely used for personal development.

For further information or to buy your copy now here is a direct link to CyberSayer.

CyberSayer II is available for Windows® (XP and Vista) as a downloadable installation file ( AUD$7 8) or an installation CD mailed anywhere in the world (AUD$85). You can order your preferred choice now at our Online Webshop

Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film.  You can attend an event live anywhere in the world, or watch a live streaming of the event on your home computer.

Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.

ENERGY UPDATE

May is the 5th month of the year, and we are in a Universal 1 year (2+0+0+8=10 and 1+0=1), thus the energies for May relate to the vibration 6 calculated as follows: (5+1 = 6).
So lets take a look at how the 6 vibration combines with our lunar/solar energies this month.
The number 6 is the heart number.  The number of nurturing for self, family, home and all relationships.
As you can see from the list above there are many ‘Heart/Love’ events around the world this month…and with the influence of Taurus (an Earth sign)… it all relates to nurturing and loving our planet Earth - all of life be it plants, animals and humans.. across all Nations… to recognise we are all ONE.
Enjoy this month, in the LOVE vibration.  Coincidently  ‘I AM DIVINE LOVE’  is our Wave of Love event this month… it is so beautiful the power of the infinite intelligence to synchronise all these LOVE events in perfect order and divine timing.
This full moon is a powerful one.. use in wisely for the LOVE of our beautiful Gaia.

Moon & Sun in Taurus

Saturn Direct
in Virgo
Sat 3rd May
Jupiter Retrograde
in Capricorn
Sun 11th May

For this New Moon, the Moon (Intuition, Unconcious, Emotions) and Sun (our Light, Consciousness, Identity) are present in Taurus (Determined, Material, Comfort) an Earth sign.
This month will set much change in motion for our Earth:  how can we care for her, and ensure sustainable living and growth for future generations.  How are your personal goals aligned with the wider community.. how can you make a difference.
Connect with Taurus energy to really evaluate your perception of what ‘Abundance’ is all about.. is it material wealth, or is it a clean nurtured sustainable planet - food for all, good health, loving relationships and shared resources.
This is a great New Moon to connect with the Earth element and really set you goals for yourself and hence the future of our planet.
The 3 days which lead up to the New Moon are called the Balsamic Moon (2, 3 & 4th May)…pay attention to your thoughts as they are  highlighting your destiny.  Use this time to ‘consciously create’ your destiny.

Saturn moves direct in Virgo just prior to the New Moon, and then Jupiter moves Retrograde in Capricorn after the New Moon.  What this means is, we are given this time out to review where we are headed.
Use the Saturn/Virgo energy to really analyse what is it you really want from a Soul level, and then use the Jupiter/Cap energy to go within, reassess those goals you previously set.. and ask the question.. do they really reflect who I am and what I want… for myself and in service to humanity ?

Pluto (transformation) & Jupiter (abundance) stay retro until September… so some inner work is needed for our planet… in order for us to move forward united.

The Full Moon in Scorpio ( Obsessive, Passionate, Intuitive) is reflecting the light of the Sun in Taurus (Determined, Material, Comfort).
Personally I found last full moon energy quite intense, and now here we go again with the Moon & Sun in the same signs… but this time with the influence of Chiron, Mercury & Neptune.
After all our ‘why’ questions last month… this full moon is propelling us to change.. in other words to not see ourselves as a victim.. but we must BE THE CHANGE.
With both Neptune & Chiron in Aquarius and retrograde, you are connected with a deep longing to change our world and find new ways of healing our pain… as you connect with the collective pain… you have a choice… allow yourself to be overwhelmed by its intensity… or transmute these energy’s into LOVE.
This is not an idealistic dream, this is about bringing Truth, Integrity and Accountability back to our global family… and through authenticity we transcend the pain and are LOVE.
Then just as we near the end of the month, on the 29th Mercury moves retrograde in Aquarius.  Now I always put a positive slant on Mercury Retrograde - and see it as an experience of growth.

Traditionally Merc Retro is when all communication probs happen, computers go beserk, telephones don’t work, mis-communication with colleagues etc… thus it is not the time to actively sign contracts, set up major communication links, purchase computers etc..

I however view Merc Retro as a time to be open to the flow.. and if something does not work take the opportunity to re-do or think laterally to make it happen.  I view it as a time of having to learn about aspects of ourselves in the face of perceived adversity, and the beauty these experiences bring into our lives.

THE WHO Bulletin newsletter

New feature: selected Bulletin content is now appearing in Russian and Chinese.

In the Bulletin series, Primary Health Care: 30 years on, Gail Reed reports from Havana on how primary health care has been an essential part of Cuba’s health system since the 1960s.

Dear reader,

This month’s special theme is prevention and control of childhood pneumonia. This theme ties in with the cover poster, which highlights the health of newborn babies.

Brian Greenwood introduces this special issue, in an editorial, with an overview of the action that is needed across the globe to prevent and control childhood pneumonia. The burden of pneumonia among HIV-infected children is under particular scrutiny, with an editorial by Prakash Mohan Jeena and a report from South Africa. In that report, Claire Keeton looks at how HIV is driving child pneumonia in sub-Saharan Africa.

In an interview, Tabish Hazir explains why pneumonia is the number one killer of Pakistan’s children less than five years of age. Theresa Braine reports on the controversial funding mechanism considered to be a possible solution in the global struggle for funds to fight pneumonia.

Karin Källander et al. investigate fatal pneumonia cases among children less than five years old in rural Uganda to determine why they died. Penny Dawson et al. demonstrate how community-based management of childhood pneumonia can be effective in resource-limited settings, such as Nepal.

Penny Enarson et al. describe the successful implementation of oxygen concentrators in paediatric wards in all district hospitals in Malawi, a low-income country.

Igor Rudan et al. examine global statistics on childhood pneumonia and provide details on the main risk factors. Stephen M Graham et al. examine current pneumonia case-management guidelines and propose improvements in a variety of resource-limited settings among different at-risk groups.

David R Marsh et al. assess current policies and plans for the community case management of pneumonia in 57 high-risk countries. Daniel E Roth et al. suggest some nutritional interventions that may help reduce the burden of childhood pneumonia.

Shabir A Madhi et al. discuss advances made in the use of both established and newer conjugate vaccines in reducing childhood pneumonia morbidity and mortality. A review by Frank DeStefano et al. did not identify major safety problems with use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.

Mukesh Dherani et al. demonstrate an increased risk of pneumonia among young children exposed to indoor air pollution from unprocessed solid fuels. Interventions to improve child survival from pneumonia don’t always reach those in greatest need, according to E K Mulholland et al.

Heal while sleeping newsletter

Heal While Sleeping
New Monthly Energy Sessions Begin Wed. 5/7/08

Dear Dominique,
I want to thank everyone who participated in the free healing session.  Many people from all over the world took part and I am especially grateful for those who forwarded the information to their friends.  By forwarding the information to others allows many people who can’t afford energy healing to benefit from it.

You can heal in your sleep.  One of the wonderful things about distant energy healing is that you don’t have to go anywhere or do anything and healing can happen.  It couldn’t be much easier.

I am sharing Teresa’s email with her permission.  She writes about her experience with the no fee session and also mentions her time with John of God in Brazil.  John of God is probably the best known healer in the world.  People from all the world travel to see him.  ABC Primetime News did a full hour special on him.  It can be expensive to travel to see him and take a lot of time.  The trip can be very difficult for people who are ill.

I am starting a new monthly healing program on Wednesday May 7.  There are more details later in the letter if you are interested.

kailash Dear Michael,
“Last night I experienced your free energy session and I have to say I am totally convinced of the power of Qigong. I have always been curious about Qigong and it effects and after what I experienced last night I signed up for your monthly sessions.

I am kinesthetic and have always been able to feel and sense energy but never for very long periods of time until last night. My whole body buzzed for an hour from head to toe. I did get cold during the session, had to go to the bathroom a couple of times, felt the energy work on my abdomen where I have had several surgeries, and was extremely energized after the session.

I woke up this morning and have the sniffles which I assume is part of the detox and releasing process and have continued to have alot of energy.

The best way I know to describe my experience last night is to compare it to my experience with John of God in Brazil two years ago. I spent two weeks with John of God and felt the same sort of energy effects on my body but it came in waves over short periods during the two weeks I was there. Last night, it felt like the waves of energy I experienced in Brazil with John of God were compressed into one hour and the intensity was much greater.

I had to fly home today and could even feel the energy throughout my day, as I traveled through airports and on the plane. I am profoundly touched and grateful you are sharing your gift as a conduit for this energy and am looking forward to the changes I am and will continue to experience over the coming months.”
Thank you again.               Teresa

I often have people join these distant healing sessions who have been to see John of God. There are many wonderful healers in the world.  I didn’t use this example to compare people’s work, but to show that people can get great healing results by simply staying home and not having to do much else.  It can’t get any easier than that.  Some people can get better results with other healers than with me.  There are so many factors involved in healing.

Sometimes healers from other countries come to the US and find that they don’t get as good of results as they did in Asia etc..  Each culture has it’s own group energy field around it.  In China there is a 5,000 year history and tradition of people using energy healing and a belief in these methods, so often it is easier for healers from Asia to get better results there than here in the West.  The mind is a powerful facilitator of healing and a belief in the methods make it easier to obtain results though good results can still be obtained even if people don’t believe in it.

Here is another email that shows how the energy can get transferred.  I told people this time they could read the information about the no fee session to others and they would receive the energy.

Hello Michael,
“First I wanted to thank you for the gift of healing light you gave.  It was very powerful, especially leading up to it.  When I called my mom to read the email to her, immediately she put her intention to receive, then listened.  After I was done reading it to her she said, “When you first started reading I felt a huge ball of energy go through my entire body and right before you called I had an earache and was about to go to the bathroom to put cotton in my ears, but now all the pain is gone!”  My mom is a natural healer and said she felt immense heat in her hands the entire healing session and leading up to the session.  She thanks you with all her heart.

For myself, I gave my intention to receive your gift on Wednesday am.  Later, suddenly my entire crown felt intense pressure, almost as if the top of my head were bruised.  I recognized this feeling as my crown chakra opening and expanding.  For the next three days I had moments of fatigue, joy, sadness, grief, bliss, and light coursing through my being; all preparing the way for my greatess potential to emerge.  I sat as a witness to the emotions moving out, knowing those were complete. I am very grateful to you, Michael, for this immense gift you share with us all.”
Many blessings to you, dear one.     Kelly

Monthly Energy Healing Session Information
Receive an entire month of energy healing for $99. Add your pets or family members living at home for only $39 or $138 for an entire household.

In light of recent events in the world I felt guided to offer a program that can greatly accelerate one’s healing process. I am going to do a major energy transmission once a week and continued energetic adjustments for everyone who joins the program for a  month.

I feel that this series of energy transmissions can be life transforming for many people. Although one session can often provide dramatic results, multiple sessions can deepen the energy work and get to deep-seated core issues. By receiving energy for a month, the energy will continue to work deeper and be able to address long held patterns and anchor the changes. When one has had an energetic pattern for many years, it can take time to release and cancel the pattern and move it out of one’s energy field.

My goal is to give everyone who joins this program energetic support for the month. You will not only get a weekly long distance energy session but you will also get some other energetic adjustments during this time. I believe that this program can be one of the best things that you can do for yourself for your well-being. For the price of what some people pay for a doctor’s visit or some other event, you are going to receive energetic support for a month.

This energy work will help to clear and balance the chakras and acupuncture meridians to assist the body and mind to heal itself.

Most people know, who have worked with me before, that the energy works on many levels, mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. My main interest is getting people to clear out energy blockages so that they can realize their highest potential. Clearing the energy field can help people to become more intuitive, creative, healthy and more aware. With so many unusual things happening at this time, an expanded state of awareness is one of the most important things that one can achieve.

The main sessions are on Wednesday nights, more details below. The intermittent adjustments will happen at various times for different people and there will be no set times for these adjustments.

Energy starts going out to people when they sign up and often people report they can notice the effects right away. Dan from Michigan writes , “Have I told you before that I often sense, feel or see changes before the actual day and time you are transmitting energy. It starts after the initial contact is made by you and I.”

I also do an energetic Feng Shui on people’s living environment. This can help to clear negative energy fields in a house and one of the major things that can assist one’s well being. Someone wrote this after one of the long distance group sessions, “I actually start feeling stuff way before you start. It’s like the energy in the room changes.”

You can still be active during the session and get great results. The optimal way to receive the energy is to be in a quiet relaxed position during the session. Some people just won’t be able to do this on this day or may have something planned some of the evenings. Even if you are out doing something, the energy will still do it’s work and many people have told me how beneficial the session was for them even when they weren’t able to be quiet. Dave writes after one of the sessions, “Hi; Michael the session slipped my mind last Wednesday; then around 8 o’clock I felt this intense energy and was reminded of the power of this healing.” Also it is ok to be asleep during the sessions and this is a good way to receive the energy.

I have many testimonials from people telling about how much the energy sessions have helped them.

Michael. “These sessions have been astonishing - I am still feeling major affects in all categories. Astonishing! I truly wonder what this last one will bring.” Posey

This is from Beatrice in Italy. “But this morning when i left home to get to work i felt something really weird: i felt that i was a part of the world. I looked at the trees, at other people, at the birds and at the wind as they are familiar, much more familiar. And i feel like in peace. “

Please email me if you decide to join the session. Let me know how you are going to pay, and I will confirm that I have you on my list and I will send instructions on how to enhance the sessions. If you do not hear back from me within 2 days, please write again as sometimes e-mails get lost.

The first major session will begin Wed. and on three consecutive Wednesday’s afterwards. The energy sessions will start at 7pm and end at 8pm, California (Pacific) time.

In order to participate in the program I need to receive the $99 before the first session. You can pay by most credit cards , go to the purchase page. You can also pay by check. Checks need to be received before the first session. Send the check to;

Connections Magazine Scotland

This is the web site for Connections Magazine Scotland - Scotland’s Voice of Alternative Health.

Buddha ImageConnections was first published in 1983 to promote the then fairly small Alternative Health field in Scotland. Since that time Complementary Medicine has grown massively and Connections has reflected that expansion in Scotland in the number of therapies, training courses, centres and therapists now advertising in our pages.

We carry:

  • Articles by and Interviews with, the best practitioners in Scotland.
  • Directory of Therapists and Centres.
  • Diary listing over 200 courses, workshops, lectures, classes and events taking place throughout Scotland.
  • Book and Media Reviews.
  • News Items.
  • and the famous Bruce Laird column, which takes a wry look at some of the excesses of the alternative health scene.

Advertising Rates, Events Diary entry form, Alternative Health Directory entry form and Subscription form are all available through the pages of the website.

In the 20 plus years since we started Connections we have seen an incredible rate of change. Few people had heard of any complementary therapies beyond what we now consider ‘traditional’ like acupuncture, homoeopathy, massage and osteopathy. Today there are a myriad of approaches available on the open market and the health-conscious public needs to exercise more caution than ever before when approaching the field of alternative therapies. No longer is it merely the domain of the indulgent well-off, as we see an increasing range of disciplines such as Reiki, Tai Chi, Indian Head Massage and Meditation offered in communities as diverse as the once notorious Easterhouse in Glasgow’s east end and the idyllic island communities of Shetland and Orkney.

Technologically we have also seen incredible leaps since our early days of literally cutting and pasting with Tippex (does anyone still use it?) to create the early editions of Connections. Now with computers at an affordable price we are able to produce professional publications from home and communicate with like minded people not only across Scotland but also share exchanges across the globe. This being the case it should be noted that the health of communities can also be greatly enhanced by better communications with our next door neighbour too.

With this site we will now be in a better position to continue in our quest of introducing, reporting and simplifying the maze of approaches to alternative health in Scotland and beyond. You too can join us in this quest by letting us know which approaches are best for you, what you’d like to see featured and helping to continue to also spread the printed word which, thankfully, can still be read on a train or toilet seat!

Fruit Fly hold neuroscience promise UIC

Fruit Fly Phlebotomy Holds Neuroscience Promise

Drawing blood from a fruit fly may only be slightly easier than getting it from a proverbial stone or turnip, but success could provide substantial benefits for neuroscientists.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago managed the feat and say their method could expedite understanding of the physiology of important insects such as Drosophila melanogaster, the common laboratory fruit fly that shares almost three-quarters of its genetic code with humans.

Scott Shippy, associate professor of chemistry, and doctoral student Sujeewa Piyankarage developed the technique while assisting UIC neuroscientist David Featherstone, who wanted to analyze the blood from two genetic types of fruit flies he was studying.

Under a microscope, the researchers managed to scrape an incision along the body of a fruit fly larva causing it to leak hemolymph — insect blood — onto the underlying collecting plate, and then vacuum it up through a narrow tube, getting enough sample for analysis.

The technique enabled them to gather from 50 to 300 nanoliters — billionths of a liter — of fluid, about one-thousandth of a drop, without significant evaporation, even when performed in open-air conditions that are prone to evaporation.

Traditional methods require that several flies or larvae be homogenized to obtain a large enough sample for analysis. In the new method, only a single larva is used, and only one biological fluid — the hemolymph — is extracted.

“We know we have hemolymph and nothing else,” said Shippy. “It’s not diluted with any other cells. And we’re doing it on an individual organism.”

The method opens up the possibility to study an individual, rather than a general population, to learn how body chemistry affects neurological function.

Fruit flies serve as particularly good laboratory animals because of their ability to quickly breed new generations, including ones with genetic mutations that are analogues to genes that cause human diseases.

“They’re exceedingly powerful genetic tools,” said Shippy.

He said the method could also be used to extract biological fluids from adult flies, as well as from other important laboratory insects, such as cockroaches, where tiny amounts of fluid could be analyzed to study the workings of neural circuitry.

Shippy said the method might also be used for extracting fluid from humans to pinpoint where diseases are just starting.

“We’re particularly interested in retinal diseases,” he said. “Disease doesn’t happen across the whole of the retina, in many cases. Often there are small hot-spots where a disease might start. It would be very interesting to have a tool, or means to collect small volumes from areas where there’s a problem, where there’s not a problem, and places in between, to follow what’s happening.”

The findings were reported in the Feb. 15 issue of Analytical Chemistry.

Major funding for the research was provided by the National Institutes of Health.

Brain DNA ‘Remodeled’ in Alcoholism UIC

Brain DNA ‘Remodeled’ in Alcoholism

Reshaping of the DNA scaffolding that supports and controls the expression of genes in the brain may play a major role in the alcohol withdrawal symptoms, particularly anxiety, that make it so difficult for alcoholics to stop using alcohol.

The finding is reported by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in the April 2 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

DNA can undergo changes in function without any changes in inheritance or coded sequence. These “epigenetic” changes are minor chemical modifications of chromatin — dense bundles of DNA and proteins called histones.

“This is the first time anyone has looked for epigenetic changes related to chromatin remodeling in the brain during alcohol addiction,” said Dr. Subhash C. Pandey, professor and director of neuroscience alcoholism research at the UIC College of Medicine and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, the lead author of the study.

Chemical modification of histones can change the way DNA and histones are wound up together. Histone acetyltransferases (HATs) are enzymes that add acetyl groups to histones and loosen the packing, promoting gene expression. On the other hand, histone deacetylases (HDACs) remove acetyl groups from histones, causing them to wrap with DNA more tightly, decreasing gene expression.

The UIC researchers had previously shown in an animal model that levels of neuropeptide Y in the amygdala modulate anxiety and alcohol-drinking behavior. In the new study, they looked at the HDAC activity, acetylation of histones, and expression of the genes for NPY in the amygdala and the anxiety-like behaviors associated with withdrawal from chronic alcohol use.

Pandey and his colleagues found that acute exposure to alcohol decreases HDAC activity; increases the acetylation histones; increases levels of NPY — and reduced anxiety in the animals.

Conversely, anxiety-like behaviors during withdrawal in animals with chronic alcohol exposure was associated with an increase in HDAC activity and decrease in histones acetylation and NPY levels.

Importantly, blocking the observed increase in HDAC activity using an HDAC inhibitor during alcohol withdrawal brought up histone acetylation and NPY expression levels in the amygdala and prevented the development of anxiety-like behaviors.

“Our findings suggest that HDAC inhibitors may have potential as therapeutic agents in treating alcoholism,” Pandey said.

The researchers also found that levels of a protein known as CREB binding protein, which has HAT enzymatic activity, were increased by acute alcohol but were decreased during ethanol withdrawal.

They concluded that the enzymes that are involved in remodeling of chromatin play an important role in the anxiety that accompanies alcohol withdrawal as well as in the anti-anxiety effects of acute alcohol use.

“We need new strategies to treat alcoholism that are directed toward the prevention of withdrawal symptoms,” Pandey said. “Anxiety associated with withdrawal from alcohol abuse is a key factor in the maintenance of alcohol addiction.”

The research was supported by grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the Department of Veteran Affairs. Rajesh Ugale, Huaibo Zhang, Lei Tang and Anand Prakash of UIC and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center also contributed to the study.

:: Objectives

The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network contributes towards global health security by:

  • combating the international spread of outbreaks
  • ensuring that appropriate technical assistance reaches affected states rapidly
  • contributing to long-term epidemic preparedness and capacity building.

The initial meeting of partners in Geneva in April 2000 brought together representatives of technical institutions, organizations and networks in global epidemic surveillance and response to discuss “Global Outbreak Alert and Response”. Participants identified the need for a global network, building on new and existing partnerships, to deal with the global threats of epidemic-prone and emerging diseases. A Steering Committee of network partners is guiding development of the network.

WHO coordinates international outbreak response using resources from the network. WHO also provides a secretarial service for the network (e.g. employment of project manager, support for the Steering Committee and structures) as part of its Alert and Response Operations within CSR. In addition, protocols for network structure, operations and communications have been developed to improve coordination between partners.

:: Partners

The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network focuses technical and operational resources from scientific institutions in Member States, medical and surveillance initiatives, regional technical networks, networks of laboratories, United Nations organizations (e.g. UNICEF, UNHCR), the Red Cross (International Committee of the Red Cross, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and national societies) and international humanitarian nongovernmental organizations (e.g. Médecins sans Frontières, International Rescue Committee, Merlin and Epicentre). Participation is open to technical institutions, networks and organizations that have the capacity to contribute to international outbreak alert and response.

:: Guiding Principles for International Outbreak Alert and Response

Since April 2000, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network has been bringing agreed standards to international epidemic response through the development of Guiding Principles for International Outbreak Alert and Response and operational protocols to standardize epidemiological, laboratory, clinical management, research, communications, logistics support, security, evacuation and communications systems.

The Guiding Principles of International Outbreak Alert and Response aim to improve the coordination of international assistance in support of local efforts by partners in the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network.

WHO pandemic alert and response information. Whats it all about?

pidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response

WHO Programme on Disease Control in Humanitarian Emergencies (DCE)

Epidemics and pandemics can place sudden and intense demands on health systems. They expose existing weaknesses in these systems and, in addition to their morbidity and mortality, can disrupt economic activity and development.

The world requires a global system that can rapidly identify and contain public health emergencies and reduce unneeded panic and disruption of trade, travel and society in general.

The revised International Health Regulations, IHR(2005) provide a global framework to address these needs through a collective approach to the prevention, detection, and timely response to any public health emergency of international concern.

Our vision

An integrated global alert and response system for epidemics and other public health emergencies based on strong national public health systems and capacity and an effective international system for coordinated response.

Core functions

Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response (EPR) has six core functions:

  • Support Member States for the implementation of national capacities for epidemic preparedness and response in the context of the IHR(2005), including laboratory capacities and early warning alert and response systems;
  • Support national and international training programmes for epidemic preparedness and response;
  • Coordinate and support Member States for pandemic and seasonal influenza preparedness and response;
  • Develop standardized approaches for readiness and response to major epidemic-prone diseases (e.g. meningitis, yellow fever, plague);
  • Strengthen biosafety, biosecurity and readiness for outbreaks of dangerous and emerging pathogens outbreaks (e.g. SARS, viral haemorrhagic fevers);
  • Maintain and further develop a global operational platform to support outbreak response and support regional offices in implementation at regional level.
