The Bulletin Feb 2008

The Bulletin continues its commemorative volume to mark the 60th anniversary of the World Health Organization this month by highlighting malaria on its cover. Marcel Tanner & Don de Savigny examine why malaria eradication is back on the global health agenda. Anthony Mbonye et al. assess the efficacy of malaria treatment among pregnant women,and Samuel Shillcutt et al. look at the cost-effectiveness of different methods of diagnosing malaria in endemic countries. Dr Awa Marie Coll-Seck , Executive Director of Roll Bank Malaria,talks about her hopes for a new facility to make subsidized antimalarials available to developing countries.

 

Randolph Nesse proposes in an editorial that evolutionary biology should be taught as an integral part of public health training. In another editorial , Eloi Marijon et al. make the case for echocardiographic screening of children at risk of rheumatic heart disease.

 

The news section continues its monthly series highlighting the primary health care experience of diverse countries with a feature from Bangladesh by Aasha Mehreen Amin. Dale Gavlak reports from Jordan on what needs to be done to stop the epidemic of smoking in WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Region. Jeremy Wagstaff explains why it has taken so long for satellite technologies to become useful in public health emergencies.

 

Herman Holtslag et al. find that road traffic injuries are responsible for most of the major trauma burden in the Netherlands . Anthony Nardone et al. report on the coverage of rubella vaccination in Australia and 16 European countries. Archana Shah et al. describe how a WHO global survey was used to monitor maternal and perinatal health.

 

Hugh Reyburn et al. find that much improvement is needed in the care given to children in paediatric wards in the United Republic of Tanzania. Francis Andre et al. calculate the return on investment for vaccination policies in low-income countries.

 

Rifat Atun & Igor Olynik document the difficulties in implementing tuberculosis control policies in the Ukraine. Peter Cherutich et al. describe the barriers to good care of HIV-infected children in Kenya.
