Hi,
Just a reminder that ALL Australians have been invited to contribute their ideas to the Australian government 2020 Summit www.australia2020.gov.au
Of relevance to natural therapists, ideas are being sought for a long-term national health strategy, including strategies on how to invest to prevent chronic and acute health problems, and how to plan for the future demands of the medical workforce.
The government is currently very interested in disease prevention, ’self-management’ of chronic disease, and the best utilisation of the existing health workforce. In this debate, the existence or utilisation of complementary therapists is not acknowledged. I think that thoughtful submissions for the Summit present a fantastic opportunity for the ’complementary’ health workforce to be noticed.
Submissions are to be no longer than 500 words and must be received no later than 5:00pm Wednesday 9 April 2008
see http://www.australia2020.gov.au/submissions/index.cfm
All submissions require a ‘name for publication’. This can be an individual, group or organisation. Submissions will be collected by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and will be published subject to editorial control that restricts offensive material or material not appropriate to be made public.
I personally consider that at this stage, the more voices heard from the profession, the better for raising awareness and profile. So I urge you to consider making a submission in some capacity, and/or to pass this message on to others who might be interested.
If you have a network, you may feel inclined to share this information, and encourage your contacts to make sure the Government knows we are no longer prepared to be an ‘invisible army’ !
Regards,
Patricia Reed

For the 20 million people not invited to the 2020 Summit, the online community created a wiki so people across Australia could post, discuss, and vote on the best ideas for the country. It’s like a virtual 2020 Summit for the whole country. It’s totally a grassroots effort. It’s free, can be anonymous, and isn’t being sponsored by any political party, corporation, union, or special interests. It’s just people who want to encourage an online national brainstorming session.
The site is at http://ozideas.wetpaint.com. There are pages for over 20 different issues and even an online petition to get the best ideas heard at the actual Summit.
For your amusement and that of the public’s, we also created a funny web “commercial” for the site – it’s of Kevin Rudd, Brendan Nelson, and Peter Garrett break dancing. Check that out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQZa17-Dt_4.
It’s a great way for everyone to participate in the summit.
