Rice crisis as prices soar bbc news.

Asian states feel rice pinch

Graph showing rice prices

Asian countries have been struggling to cope as the cost of rice has reached record levels.

The price of the staple crop has risen by as much as 70% during the last year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Shortages have begun to hit some importing countries.

Factors contributing to the price rise include:

  • Poor harvests resulting from extreme weather
  • A rise in demand in some rice-importing countries, where populations and incomes are growing
  • The expectation of further price increases - resulting in hoarding
  • Low stockpiles and a long term lack of agricultural investment

The spike is also part of a general surge in food costs worldwide, so the option of switching to cheaper foods is often not available.

Producers including India, China and Vietnam have restricted exports as they try to protect their stocks and limit inflation.

Importers such as Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Afghanistan have been hit hard.

INDIA

India is the second largest rice grower in the world behind China. With rice the staple food for 65% of the country’s one billion plus people, much is consumed domestically.

But prices have been soaring - a shopkeeper in Delhi told the BBC that the cost of one variety had increased by a third in the last two months, rising from 12 rupees (29 US cents) per kilogram to 16 rupees (39 cents).

The price of most other varieties, including long-grained aromatic basmati rice, has gone up by eight-to-10 rupees a kilo, he said.

The government has announced a total ban on exports of non-basmati rice, in a bit to curb rising food prices, which have helped push inflation to a 13-month high.

The price for basmati rice, meanwhile, has been raised to $1,200 per tonne to discourage exports.

Officials say as yet there is no crisis - India has more than enough reserves to feed its population.

They also say India will honour its commitments to export rice to neighbouring Bangladesh.

But the International Rice Research Institute says that the sustainability of rice farming in India and beyond is threatened by overuse of fertilisers and soil health.

BANGLADESH

rice aid pie chart

Spiralling rice prices have left the people of Bangladesh facing their worst food shortages since the major famine of 1974.

Over the last year, prices have nearly doubled to about 35 taka (50 cents), while there has been no corresponding increase in wages.

Hundreds of poor families are now surviving on one meal a day, and spending 70-80% of their budget on food. The problem is most acute in urban areas where aid agencies say they are very concerned about infant malnourishment.

Local factors have contributed to the price rise. Bangladesh has been hit by severe flooding twice in the last year and a devastating cyclone in November.

The government is giving rice away to 2.6 million people and supplying some families at discounted prices.

It has had to import four million tonnes of rice from India over the last six months - more than double the usual amount.

But the government’s critics say it has made matters worse with an anti-corruption drive that has led to the closure of many unofficial rice supply outlets closed down.

PHILIPPINES

The Philippines is listed by the US Department of Agriculture as the world’s top importer of rice for 2007, ahead of Nigeria, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

Domestic demand has risen as the population has grown, pushing up prices.

With rice stocks low, the government has been negotiating with neighbouring countries to secure imports, signing a deal with Vietnam last week and working for another one with Thailand.

Fears of public unrest are growing.

President Gloria Arroyo has asked authorities to crack down on hoarders. Officials have said they could be charged with economic sabotage - a crime that carries a life sentence.

There have also been efforts to reduce consumption. Some of the country’s fast-food chains are offering half portions of rice at the government’s request. The government has also asked the public to save leftover rice.

It has been reported that Communist rebels could be thinking of exploiting the situation to stir up discontent - guerrillas recently burnt a rice trader’s vehicles in the central island of Panay.

Troops have been called in to protect deliveries of rice to poor areas, while farmers have reportedly begun guarding their crops.

THAILAND

Thailand has long been the world’s largest exporter of rice, well ahead of Vietnam and the US.

It has not yet placed any restrictions on exports, and has denied reports that it is considering taking this step.

However, some rice millers and traders who deal on forward contracts have been suffering, after being caught out by price fluctuations.

Exporters have even complained that they would prefer to have stable prices than high prices.

Some millers have hoarded rice in an attempt to earn higher profits later on, pushing prices higher still as they restrict supply.

The government has released some of its 2.1 million tonnes of stockpiled rice in an attempt to contain inflation.

Rice prices increased by more than 50% last year and have continued to rise.

While in some countries rice consumption has risen with prosperity, Thais have been eating a greater variety of foods and less rice as they have become wealthier.

CHINA

Chinese consumers have been have been eating more meat and less rice as their income has risen, according to the FAO.

Indian workers prepare rice for packing near Hyderabad, 3 April 2008

India and China say they have enough rice, but have restricted exports

But the government, highly conscious of social or political tensions caused by food inflation, has moved to protect consumers by restricting exports.

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said this week that China has an “abundant” supply of rice to feed its population of more than 1.3 billion.

China had stockpiled about 40-50 million tonnes of rice, he said.

Though China is not one of the top rice exporters, export restrictions can have a big impact on importers including North Korea, which buys rice from China at very low prices as it tries to cope with frequent food shortages.

JAPAN

Rice is thought to have been produced for more than 2,500 years in Japan, where it was once seen as so important that it was worshipped as a god.

Instead of importing rice, Japan heavily subsidises its rice farmers, paying them as much as four times the market price and restricting imports.

This policy is defended by a farming community with considerable political weight, and many Japanese agree home-grown rice tastes best.

Food security is seen as politically important and the country keeps a large stockpile of rice - even though it is probably wealthy enough to buy on the international market even if prices continue to rise.

Its scientists are already looking for varieties that will be resistant to higher temperatures caused by climate change.

Japan trades relatively small quantities and has little impact on the international market.

A PIVOTAL MONTH OF CHANGE

I really believe April this year is a pivotal month of change for many on Earth.

As the Wave of Love vibrations are increasing, so many people around the world are connecting together consciously to ‘Be the Change’ that is so needed.  More and more people are waking up to realise that it is up to them in each and every moment to take responsibility for the energy they release to their environment/family/loved ones/and the greater community at large.

This month we come together for the Moses Code & Peace Vigil on the 6th April, Wesak Full Moon on the 20th and the Earth Day on the 22nd.  In a 5 vibration month we stand on a pivotal point… and we have a choice to make… ‘What do you Choose ?’.

ENERGY UPDATE

April is the 4th month of the year, and we are in a Universal 1 year (2+0+0+8=10 and 1+0=1), thus the energies for April relate to the vibration 5 calculated as follows: (4+1 = 5). So lets take a look at how the 5 vibration combines with our lunar/solar energies this month.
The number 5 is the number of freedom.  Freedom to travel, adventure and of free spirit.  It is also the mirror number, where we can sit on a pivotal point of reflecting backwards (numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4) or reflect into our future cycle (numbers 6, 7, 8 & 9).

Thus with the intensity of the energies over this full moon and the inconsistencies in our life the Scorpian energies may highlight, the 5 energies shows us our freedom of spirit and reminds us that we are free to choose our realities.

If we don’t like what we are faced  with when we stand on our 5 pivotal point, then simply just change what you are doing.  If you keep on doing the same, you will always get the same.  If you want something new then do, think, feel etc something new.  It really is as simple as that.

Work with the Arian ‘I AM’ energies this month to acknowledge you have the power within you to change your reality, and in the process you are changing the world.

Pluto Retrograde
Wed 2nd April at
7:23pm

For this New Moon, the Moon (Intuition, Unconcious, Emotions) and Sun (our Light, Consciousness, Identity) are present in Aries (Pioneer, Assertive, Impatient) a Fire sign.

The New Moon in Aries is all about action and initiation. You will be pushed along into passionate action from this point onwards, so look out.

Watch your thoughts, intentions, actions and emotions at this time as everything is very much heightened. You will strongly create in your life that which you focus the energy on.  Aries New Moon is the perfect time to be the master of your own realities using the Aries energies of ‘I AM’.

Thus I believe it is no co-incidence that the Movie - The Moses Code is being released on the weekend of the New Moon (including a global prayer vigil) - as we acknowledge globally -  I AM THAT I AM.

Pluto moves retrograde in Capricorn this month.  This is the perfect time to look at what you have been building with the ‘capricorn - roll your sleeves up and get to work’ energies… and to evalute how you are going.  Take stock of where you are at and whether a little fine tuning is needed during this retrograde time.  Pluto enters Sag in June, moving direct again in Sept and returns back to  Capricorn in late November.

Moon in Scorpio &
Sun in Taurus

Earth Day

Tues 22nd April

Daylight Savings:
Please note that daylight savings in Australia ends on the following dates:

Tasmania - 6 April
ACT, NSW, SA & VIC - 6 April
WA - 30 March
NT & QLD  no daylight savings :(

The Full Moon in Scorpio ( Obsessive, Passionate, Intuitive) is reflecting the light of the Sun in Taurus (Determined, Material, Comfort).

With this full moon comes the energy of taking responsibility for what is happening around you and on the Earth today… the questions that will come up for many will be:

Why do I allow myself to be a victim ?
Why do I blame others for my own condition ?
Why do I allow myself to feel powerless ?

With the Sun in Taurus we are  wanting to anchor the divine energies available to us at this time and make a commitment to ourselves for self-responsibility and growth.  Conversely, the Moon in Scorpio intensifies the energies, getting us in contact with our feelings and emotions.

This is intense energy which shows us the hard facts of exactly WHY each of us are in the position we are in… and that we have a choice to make the change.

With these intense energies, the next two weeks maybe turbulent for some as we reassess what it is we feel in our heart, what is important to us  and any issues in our lives which are not congruent with our heartfelt feelings.

My advice is to just love all aspects of yourself, acknowledge your divine magnificence and hand over any pain to spirit.  It is time to be truly authentic, and in your authentic love of self you expand the consciousness to embrace authentic love also.

This full moon is also the Wesak full moon. At this full moon every year, many people make the trek to the Wesak Valley at the bottom of Mt Kakaish in Tibet to celebrate Buddha’s Birthday.  It is at this full moon that Buddha comes closest to the Earth bringing much light and healing to humanity.  Heaven and Earth are brought together as one.

I recommend that everyone spends some time alone this full moon receiving the love of Buddha, and connecting with all humanity.  This would be an ideal time to take Archangels Metatron and Sandalphon Essence from The Essence of Angels range (2 drops under tongue prior to meditation).

Earth Day is on about connecting & interacting around the globe  and creating positive change in local, national, and global policies… promoting a healthy, sustainable planet.  To find out more or join in a celebration in your area:  Earth Day 22 April 2008 >>>

The Bulletin April 2008

Dear Reader,

This month’s cover poster is devoted to the importance of skilled birth attendants and improving child and maternal mortality.  Seven items are devoted to this subject:

In two editorials, Cynthia Stanton examines who should assist women in childbirth, what midwives should be permitted to do and where births should take place, while Dileep Mavalankar et al. suggest that political and administrative reasons, rather than lack of technical knowledge, account for India’s high maternal mortality.

Theresa Braine reports from Mexico on how midwives are making a comeback across Latin America. Joy Lawn tells the Bulletin in an interview why it takes more than money to improve newborn survival.

Iqbal Anwar et al. highlight the high levels of inequity in maternal care in Bangladesh and recommend a greater focus on overcoming financial barriers for poorer women.

Rosamund F Lewis et al. attest to the effectiveness of the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine in Uganda, which now prevents 5000 child deaths each year. Jonathan M Spector & Subhash Daga suggest that high stillbirth rates may be due to inadequate resuscitation of perinatal asphyxia cases.

Claudia Jurberg reports from Brazil on how primary health care, a key part of the country’s revamped public health system, has brought quality health care to millions.

Danielle B Clucas et al. study the need for proactive prevention and treatment of infectious diseases among Aboriginal children in northern Australia Jonathan Dart reports from the Northern Territory of Australia on how the new Labor government aims to improve Aboriginal health by tackling the social problems undermining their communities.

Research by R Leon Ochiai et al. helps to determine the diverse typhoid fever vaccination needs for different geographical areas and age groups in Asia. Mohammed A Tag-Eldin et al. study the prevalence of female genital mutilation among schoolgirls in Egypt and their attitudes to the practice.

Rhoda K Wanyenze et al. demonstrate that routine HIV testing and counselling is useful and well received in Uganda. Simon D Makombe et al. conduct the first audit on the reliability of data compiled under the national antiretroviral treatment programme in Malawi to track HIV patients.

Ellen Van de Poel et al. use the new WHO child growth standards in a broad study of child malnutrition and socioeconomic inequality in the developing world.

On the 40th anniversary of the publication of Wilson & Jungner’s Principles and practice of screening for disease, Anne Andermann et al., in the Public health classic, examine the evolution of the original screening criteria as it reflects scientific and social trends.

Energy Healing

Kids, Pets, Plants Benefit from Energy
New Monthly Healing Sessions Begin Wed. April 9, 2008

Dear Dominique,
Everything can benefit from energy healing.  Children respond exceptionally well to energy healing because usually they haven’t built up the blockages that adults can have.  Blockages can come from many sources. Toxins in our food and air, electromagnetic interference from many sources, negative thinking and repressed emotions are major causes of energy blockages in the human energy system.

Pets can respond very quickly to energy healing because they don’t have all the mental blockages that humans can have.

Plants also respond very favorably to energy healing.  With every session in the monthly energy series I provide an Energetic Feng Shui that can help clear your home of negative energy and also provide positive energy to everything living in your home.  I often get letters from people who say their plants do better after the sessions.  Some people say that plants that have never bloomed or haven’t bloomed in years all of a sudden start flowering after receiving the energy.

All kinds of relationships are helped by the energy.  Many people write how their relationships with spouses, children, siblings and parents improve during the monthly program

More information about the monthly energy program later in this letter.

kailash Patrick  wrote the following letter about how the monthly healing sessions have helped his whole family especially his children.  He has given me permission to share it.

michael, “… i’ve been doing quite a bit of emotional release work around repressed emotions and can feel some shifting and blocking occuring. it has actually been a great deal of fun. family life is shifting and there is a great deal more positive energy and interaction with each and every family member.

IL. is much more outgoing than usual and has taken to riding her bike to work and is much more talkative. M. (presently @ u.c.i.) has begun to set very strong behavioral limits with her friends and associates and is exibiting much passion for her own life and choices. E. (h.s. senior) is more confident, and positive, and is outwardly much more happy. M. (h.s. soph.) has really blossomed emotionally and has begun to paint and draw almost daily, and now incorporates bright colors into her art. she has been the most aware of the energy around and in her. she continues to dialogue about all the beings and colors that she sees and is putting to paper all that she gets in awake time and dream time. it’s really awesome.

H. (7th.gr.) is so passionate about every thing, and continues to be our resident teacher. she is both cat and dog whisperer to all. woodrow our dog just loves the wednesday sessions and luxuriates in the energy. he talks up a blue streak and does a great chewbaka. he also has much better control of his bladder. dharma our cat and a very wise soul either crashes after each session or goes off alone and sits with the energy transmission quietly for about 24 hrs. and then he awakens (like the energizer bunny). we have been successful at sitting as a family for the sessions and it is the most blissful and calming time of each week. thanks.”            -patrick

The best way that I can show how the energy sessions work is have people share their experiences.  The next 2 emails show how the energy can really help plants and effect everything in the house.

Dear  Michael,
“Thank you for the month of healing sessions.  I have been doing things myself as well and so was not sure which thing was producing which result if you know what I mean?

However, there have been amazing changes in me and things around me!  I have been working on letting go of  my “attachments” tolosing weight (an issue I have been working on for almost 50 years), and having more money, etc.  After a wonderful massage last week, and making that intention, it was gone!! I feel freer I think than ever in my life! I did have diarrhea one day for seemingly no reason at all.  It happened 3 times and went away without any further problems. I imagined it was due to releasing emotional toxins since I am rarely ever ill physically and I eat natural food I prepare from scratch. I also just now read your email on dreams and I had a couple unusual dreams as well. I do not normally have many dreams and these were very unusual.

Then I have a Sheltie you were working on and he has almost totally stopped barking when I leave, something I have been working with him on for almost two  years! Hurray hurray!  He seems more perky as well!

Lastly I love orchids, however, I have never had one bloom a second time in all the years I have had them and one now has a stem with buds on it! I was quite surprised!! In addition, I have an Amaryllis plant given to me by friends about four years ago. It has had endless beautiful leaves and no bloom. I have put it outside in the summer and the slugs have eaten it all down. I tried everything and nothing worked.  Recently I cut off a few of the huge leaves since it was overflowing on my plant shelf (and I talked to it first.)  Well it is blooming!! Four beautiful big red flowers!! So that is a surprise too!

Overall things are moving forward in my life and life is getting easier as I connect to my inner wisdom more and more throughout each day!  Thank you for a wonderful month of healing!

Much love and appreciation,” Morgine

Hi Michael !
“I just wanted to let you know that many of the flowers and trees in our yards have been blooming beautifuly. And even plants I have had for YEARS, two of them have flowered! They never have had any flowers. I didn’t know they could flower!! My family as well as myself, are totally blown away. It took me a few days to finally realise it was you. Your energy is having an amazing effect on the plants!

I told my family, and I think they too are a little bit starting to believe that such things are possible. I have always believed, but it sure is nice to be able to visibly get confirmation.   But another much more important thing has come from this! It gives me renewed hope!! Especially for me, and maybe others out there who don’t feel all the “sensations” that other people claim to feel during energy sessions, that there is “something” out there.  Thanks for all you do, “  Yolanda

Monthly Energy Session Information
Receive an entire month of energy healing for $99. Add your pets or family members living at home for only $39 or $138 for an entire household.

In light of recent events in the world I felt guided to offer a program that can greatly accelerate one’s healing process. I am going to do a major energy transmission once a week and continued energetic adjustments for everyone who joins the program for a  month.

I feel that this series of energy transmissions can be life transforming for many people. Although one session can often provide dramatic results, multiple sessions can deepen the energy work and get to deep-seated core issues. By receiving energy for a month, the energy will continue to work deeper and be able to address long held patterns and anchor the changes. When one has had an energetic pattern for many years, it can take time to release and cancel the pattern and move it out of one’s energy field.

My goal is to give everyone who joins this program energetic support for the month. You will not only get a weekly long distance energy session but you will also get some other energetic adjustments during this time. I believe that this program can be one of the best things that you can do for yourself for your well-being. For the price of what some people pay for a doctor’s visit or some other event, you are going to receive energetic support for a month.

This energy work will help to clear and balance the chakras and acupuncture meridians to assist the body and mind to heal itself.

Most people know, who have worked with me before, that the energy works on many levels, mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. My main interest is getting people to clear out energy blockages so that they can realize their highest potential. Clearing the energy field can help people to become more intuitive, creative, healthy and more aware. With so many unusual things happening at this time, an expanded state of awareness is one of the most important things that one can achieve.

The main sessions are on Wednesday nights, more details below. The intermittent adjustments will happen at various times for different people and there will be no set times for these adjustments.

Energy starts going out to people when they sign up and often people report they can notice the effects right away. Dan from Michigan writes , “Have I told you before that I often sense, feel or see changes before the actual day and time you are transmitting energy. It starts after the initial contact is made by you and I.”

I also do an energetic Feng Shui on people’s living environment. This can help to clear negative energy fields in a house and one of the major things that can assist one’s well being. Someone wrote this after one of the long distance group sessions, “I actually start feeling stuff way before you start. It’s like the energy in the room changes.”

You can still be active during the session and get great results. The optimal way to receive the energy is to be in a quiet relaxed position during the session. Some people just won’t be able to do this on this day or may have something planned some of the evenings. Even if you are out doing something, the energy will still do it’s work and many people have told me how beneficial the session was for them even when they weren’t able to be quiet. Dave writes after one of the sessions, “Hi; Michael the session slipped my mind last Wednesday; then around 8 o’clock I felt this intense energy and was reminded of the power of this healing.” Also it is ok to be asleep during the sessions and this is a good way to receive the energy.

I have many testimonials from people telling about how much the energy sessions have helped them.

Michael. “These sessions have been astonishing - I am still feeling major affects in all categories. Astonishing! I truly wonder what this last one will bring.” Posey

This is from Beatrice in Italy. “But this morning when i left home to get to work i felt something really weird: i felt that i was a part of the world. I looked at the trees, at other people, at the birds and at the wind as they are familiar, much more familiar. And i feel like in peace. “

Please email me if you decide to join the session. Let me know how you are going to pay, and I will confirm that I have you on my list and I will send instructions on how to enhance the sessions. If you do not hear back from me within 2 days, please write again as sometimes e-mails get lost.

The first major session will begin Wed. and on three consecutive Wednesday’s afterwards. The energy sessions will start at 7pm and end at 8pm, California (Pacific) time.

In order to participate in the program I need to receive the $99 before the first session. You can pay by most credit cards , go to the purchase page. You can also pay by check. Checks need to be received before the first session. Send the check to;

Australian Govt health plan 2020 FYI

A long-term national health strategy

The Australian Government is committed to improving the overall health of our nation through improved preventative primary health, increased access to general practitioners and new dental care services. Investing in prevention can reduce the estimated 550,000 chronic or preventable admissions to hospital each year. The Australian Government is also committed to reforms to improve our hospital system and to ensuring Australians are able to access the best possible care when they experience serious illness or disease. The Government is also committed to a greater national medical research effort – particularly into the major disease categories impacting millions of Australian families.

The Australia 2020 Summit will examine:

  • How we invest to help prevent chronic and acute health problems
  • How we plan to ensure all Australians continue to have access to the very best of modern medical technology including pharmaceuticals
  • How we meet the emerging regulatory challenges of modern medical technology
  • The use of electronic infrastructure to facilitate efficient and effective patient care
  • Strategies to preserve Australia’s internationally unique blend of public and private health services
  • How Australia best plans for the future demands on our medical workforce.

Proposals identified at the summit will also be provided to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commissions for consideration.

2020 health plans australia Have your say.

Hi,

Just a reminder that ALL Australians have been invited to contribute their ideas to the Australian government 2020 Summit www.australia2020.gov.au

Of relevance to natural therapists, ideas are being sought for a long-term national health strategy, including strategies on how to invest to prevent chronic and acute health problems, and how to plan for the future demands of the medical workforce.

The government is currently very interested in disease prevention, ’self-management’ of chronic disease, and the best utilisation of the existing health workforce. In this debate, the existence or utilisation of complementary therapists is not acknowledged. I think that thoughtful submissions for the Summit present a fantastic opportunity for the ’complementary’ health workforce to be noticed.

Submissions are to be no longer than 500 words and must be received no later than 5:00pm Wednesday 9 April 2008

see  http://www.australia2020.gov.au/submissions/index.cfm

All submissions require a ‘name for publication’. This can be an individual, group or organisation. Submissions will be collected by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and will be published subject to editorial control that restricts offensive material or material not appropriate to be made public.

I personally consider that at this stage, the more voices heard from the profession, the better for raising awareness and profile. So I urge you to consider making a submission in some capacity, and/or to pass this message on to others who might be interested.

If you have a network, you may feel inclined to share this information, and encourage your contacts to make sure the Government knows we are no longer prepared to be an ‘invisible army’ !

Regards,

Patricia Reed

Free Tibet

PRESS RELEASE I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to world leaders and the international community for their concern over the recent sad turn of events in Tibet and for their attempts to persuade the Chinese authorities to exercise restraint in dealing with the demonstrations. Since the Chinese Government has accused me of orchestrating these protests in Tibet, I call for a thorough investigation by a respected body, which should include Chinese representatives, to look into these allegations. Such a body would need to visit Tibet, the traditional Tibetan areas outside the Tibet Autonomous Region, and also the Central Tibetan Administration here in India. In order for the international community, and especially the more than one billion Chinese people who do not have access to uncensored information, to find out what is really going on in Tibet, it would be of tremendously helpful if representatives of the international media also undertook such investigations. Whether it was intended or not, I believe that a form of cultural genocide has taken place in Tibet, where the Tibetan identity has been under constant attack. Tibetans have been reduced to an insignificant minority in their own land as a result of the huge transfer of non-Tibetans into Tibet. The distinctive Tibetan cultural heritage with its characteristic language, customs and traditions is fading away. Instead of working to unify its nationalities, the Chinese government discriminates against these minority nationalities, the Tibetans among them. It is common knowledge that Tibetan monasteries, which constitute our principal seats of learning, besides being the repository of Tibetan Buddhist culture, have been severely reduced in both in number and population. In those monasteries that do still exist, serious study of Tibetan Buddhism is no longer allowed; in fact, even admission to these centres of learning is being strictly regulated. In reality, there is no religious freedom in Tibet. Even to call for a little more freedom is to risk being labeled a separatist. Nor is there any real autonomy in Tibet, even though these basic freedoms are guaranteed by the Chinese constitution. I believe the demonstrations and protests taking place in Tibet are a spontaneous outburst of public resentment built up by years of repression in defiance of authorities that are oblivious to the sentiments of the local populace. They mistakenly believe that further repressive measures are the way to achieve their declared aim of long-term unity and stability. On our part, we remain committed to taking the Middle Way approach and pursuing a process of dialogue in order to find a mutually beneficial solution to the Tibetan issue. With these points in mind, I also seek the international community’s support for our efforts to resolve Tibet’s problems through dialogue, and I urge them to call upon the Chinese leadership to exercise the utmost restraint in dealing with the current disturbed situation and to treat those who are being arrested properly and fairly. Daniel Morcome Have you seen this young man?

From: Alissa.Walsh@immi.gov.au

Hi everyone, please take a few mins to pass this on. I couldn’t imagine
how it would feel to have a child abducted. I pray to God I never do know.

Love to you all.
Lis.
 Hello everyone

Many of you will have seen reports or ads about a missing schoolboy Daniel Morcombe from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Daniel has been missing for nearly 4 years this year.
He’s my nephew, and my brother Bruce and his wife Denise, have raised over $100,000 to fund an advertising campaign which is currently underway, in an attempt to solve Daniel’s abduction, and hopefully to capture the person or persons involved. There has been wonderful coverage of this tragic event, including ”Australian Story” on the ABC, and a major article in the current edition of “The Australian Women’s Weekly”, but still the crime is not solved.
The police now think two men were probably involved, together with a “blue car” as per the composite photo below.
Sending out emails may hopefully trigger someone’s memory, or someone’s conscience, and makes the image of Daniel and the “blue car” below available for longer than is available on an ad. It would be greatly appreciated if you could forward this email on to all your email contacts, friends, relatives and business contacts, in the hope that someone will be able to provide the missing clue that the police are looking for.
If everyone has just five email contacts, who each have five email contacts, who each have five email contacts, who each have five email contacts, that’ll be well over a million people we’ll be reaching. Thanks a lot - it’s really appreciated.
PS. Don’t forget to ask your email contacts to forward your email on to as many people as they can.
